PhD in the UK — frequently asked questions

How long is a UK PhD?

Full-time PhDs take three to four years. After graduation, PhD graduates can apply for the Graduate visa for three years.

Are UK PhDs funded?

Many are, through studentships, research-council funding, Commonwealth scholarships and university awards. Competition is strong, and some applicants self-fund.

Do I need a supervisor before applying?

For most research PhDs, yes — contacting and getting an agreement from a supervisor greatly improves your chance.

Can my family accompany me?
