IELTS Preparation Plan: A 30-Day Study Schedule for Pakistani Students

A week-by-week study plan you can follow alone or in an IELTS class in Islamabad.

Key takeaways

  • Take a diagnostic test first, then focus on your weakest skill.
  • Practise Speaking and Writing with feedback — self-study alone often stalls there.
  • Sit at least two timed full mock tests before exam day.
  • Consistency beats cramming: 2–3 focused hours a day works better than weekend marathons.

Most students need 4–8 weeks to prepare, depending on their starting level. If you have about 30 days, this plan keeps you on track.

Before day 1

Take a diagnostic test (or a free English assessment) to find your current band and weakest skill.

Week 1: foundations

  • Learn the format of each section — see our IELTS test format.
  • Listening: daily 20 minutes of English audio; practise Sections 1–2.
  • Reading: skimming, scanning and True/False/Not Given.
  • Writing: Task 1 structure; Task 2 essay paragraphs.
  • Speaking: record yourself answering Part 1 questions.

Week 2: skill building

  • Listening Sections 3–4; practise note completion and maps.
  • Reading: matching headings and sentence completion under time.
  • Writing: two Task 1 and two Task 2 answers, reviewed against band descriptors.
  • Speaking: Part 2 cue cards (2 minutes), then Part 3 discussion.

Week 3: timed practice

  • One full timed Listening + Reading set every two days.
  • Writing: one Task 2 essay every day in 40 minutes.
  • Speaking: mock interviews with a teacher or partner who gives feedback.

Week 4: mock tests and polish

Day Task
22–23 Full mock test 1, review mistakes
24–26 Fix weakest skill
27 Full mock test 2
28–29 Light review, vocabulary, speaking confidence
30 Rest before the exam

Tips

  • Use British English spellings consistently.
  • Do not memorise essays; learn structures instead.
  • Practise on a computer if you will take computer-delivered IELTS.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare for IELTS in 30 days?

Many students with a good starting level can reach their target in 4–8 weeks. A diagnostic test tells you if 30 days is realistic.

How many hours a day should I study for IELTS?

About 2–3 focused hours daily, with one timed practice section each day.

Is an IELTS class better than self-study?

Classes help most with Speaking and Writing feedback. Many students combine self-study with a class and mock tests.
