PhD in the UK for Pakistani Students: Funding, Research Proposal, Supervisors and Visa

Funded PhDs in the UK are competitive but achievable. Here is the full path — proposal, supervisor email, funding, visa and the 3-year Graduate visa.

Key takeaways

  • A UK PhD takes 3–4 years; PhD graduates can apply for a 3-year Graduate visa.
  • Success depends on supervisor fit, a focused research proposal and funding.
  • Typical English requirement is IELTS 6.5–7.0; some subjects need ATAS clearance.
  • We support PhD applications for UK universities only.

A PhD in the UK is a three-to-four-year research journey that can launch an academic or industry-research career. For Pakistani students, the biggest hurdles are funding, supervisor fit and proposal quality — not the visa.

Step 1: Choose your research direction

Start with a topic that connects your master’s work, publications or industry experience to a gap in the literature. Browse recent papers in your field and note who is publishing in the UK.

Step 2: Find supervisors

  • Search university department pages and research-group lists.
  • Look for advertised funded projects on university and research-council websites.
  • Email 5–10 potential supervisors with a short, focused message.

What your first email should include

  1. One-sentence introduction (degree, university).
  2. Two-sentence summary of your research interest and how it fits their work.
  3. A link to your CV and, if available, a 1-page proposal summary.
  4. A polite request for a short conversation.

Avoid mass emails that say “Dear Sir/Madam”.

Step 3: Write the research proposal

A strong proposal (usually 1,000–2,000 words) includes:

  • Title and research question
  • Background and gap in existing work
  • Aims and objectives
  • Methodology — data, methods, tools, ethics
  • Timeline — year-by-year plan
  • Expected contribution
  • References

Be specific and realistic. Tailor it to the supervisor’s research strengths.

Step 4: Funding

Source Notes
University studentships Tuition + stipend; competitive
Funded projects advertised by supervisors Apply directly; fixed topics
Commonwealth Scholarships For eligible countries including Pakistan; apply via official channels
Industry or charity funding Research-specific
Self-funding / partial Tuition typically £15,000–£30,000 per year plus living costs

See the scholarships hub for current guidance.

Step 5: Entry requirements

  • Master’s degree with strong grades (or equivalent)
  • Research experience or publications where possible
  • IELTS 6.5–7.0 (UKVI where required)
  • References and CV
  • ATAS clearance for some sensitive subjects

See our IELTS preparation page for test support.

Step 6: Visa and arrival

After an unconditional offer you receive a CAS, show funds (including living costs for the required months), pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, and attend biometrics. PhD graduates can later apply for a 3-year Graduate visa.

Common mistakes

  1. Applying without contacting supervisors.
  2. A broad or unfocused proposal.
  3. Ignoring funding until after you receive an offer.
  4. Weak English scores.
  5. Not preparing for the viva or research interview.

Most applicants have a master’s (MS/MPhil) or a strong 16-year degree with research experience. Requirements differ by university and subject.

Can I bring my family on a PhD student visa?

PhD students are on a postgraduate research route, which currently allows eligible dependants. Rules change, so confirm current conditions before applying.
