Study in the UK from Pakistan 2026–27: Fees, Visa Funds, Intakes and Honest Odds

Costs, funds, intakes, Graduate Route changes and the mistakes that sink UK applications — a complete 2026–27 guide for Pakistani students.

Key takeaways

  • A UK master’s takes one year, which cuts total cost — but 2026 visa scrutiny for Pakistani applicants is the strictest in years.
  • Visa funds: £1,171 per month outside London or £1,529 in London for up to nine months, held for 28 consecutive days, plus first-year tuition.
  • The Graduate Route is 2 years now and drops to 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027 (PhD graduates keep 3 years).
  • Most taught-master’s students cannot bring dependants.

The UK is still the first choice for many Pakistani students: one-year master’s degrees, globally recognised universities and a clear post-study route. But the rules and the mood around UK applications have changed — so this guide covers the numbers and the realities.

Why the UK appeals

  • Short degrees. Most master’s courses take 12 months; bachelor’s degrees in England take three years.
  • Recognition. UK degrees are respected by employers and by HEC when you return home.
  • Choice. From Russell Group research universities to practical, employer-linked modern universities.
  • Pathways. Foundation years, pre-master’s and top-up programmes for different backgrounds. See our top-up degree guide.

The real costs

Item Typical amount
Tuition — bachelor’s £14,000–£30,000 per year
Tuition — master’s (1 year) £14,000–£32,000 total
Visa funds — outside London £1,171 × 9 months = £10,539
Visa funds — London £1,529 × 9 months = £13,761
Student visa fee about £558
Immigration Health Surcharge about £776 per year

These figures change; always confirm on GOV.UK before paying. The living-cost funds must be available in your account for 28 consecutive days before you apply. For help structuring this, read our guide on showing funds for a study visa.

Entry requirements in plain English

  • Academic: a 16-year degree (BS/BSc/BBA/BE) for most master’s courses. 14-year degree holders usually need a top-up or bridging route.
  • English: typically IELTS 6.0–6.5 for master’s; some universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter for admission, but the visa may still require an approved test. Compare options in our IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo guide.
  • Documents: transcripts, passport, CV, personal statement and sometimes references.
  • Health: a tuberculosis test from an approved clinic.

Intakes and timeline

Intake Apply by Notes
September Jan–Jun Widest choice, best scholarships
January/February Aug–Nov Good for master’s; fewer scholarships
May Jan–Mar Limited courses

Work backwards: documents (1 month) → applications (1–2 months) → offer and deposit → CAS → funds window (28 days) → visa (about 3 weeks) → travel.

What changed in 2026

  • Stricter sponsors. From June 2026 universities must keep their student visa refusal rate under 5%, so they filter applications harder. See what changed for Pakistani applicants.
  • Graduate Route. Currently two years; reduced to 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates keep three years.
  • Levy. A £925-per-student international student levy on English universities starts in August 2028 — paid by universities, not directly by students, but it may influence fees.
  • Dependants. Most taught-master’s students can’t bring family.

Mistakes that sink UK applications

  1. Choosing a course unrelated to your background without explanation.
  2. Funds that appear days before applying.
  3. Unexplained study gaps — see how to explain a gap.
  4. Inconsistent information across SOP, CV and forms.
  5. Treating the credibility interview casually.

Scholarships

Chevening and Commonwealth are fully funded but highly competitive, and universities offer partial awards of £2,000–£10,000. Browse our scholarships hub.

Our advice

Apply to the UK if your course fits your background, your funds are clean and you can explain your plan clearly. If not, compare other destinations first. For personalised guidance read the full Study in the UK page or speak to a counsellor.
