Australia Genuine Student Requirement: How to Answer Each Question with Strong Evidence

The Genuine Student requirement replaced GTE in 2024. Learn what immigration assesses and how to build answers that are specific, honest and consistent.

Key takeaways

  • The Genuine Student requirement replaced the GTE in March 2024 and applies to Subclass 500 applicants.
  • Immigration looks at your circumstances, your potential situation in Australia, the value of the course and your immigration history.
  • Specific, personal answers backed by documents beat polished generic text.
  • Pakistan is assessed at a higher evidence level, so consistent, complete documents matter.

Australia's student visa isn't only about money. Since March 2024 every applicant must satisfy the Genuine Student requirement. Pakistani applicants, who are assessed at a higher evidence level, need especially clear, consistent answers.

How to build your answers

1. Circumstances

Explain your current situation: studies/work, family, finances and why overseas study is the logical next step. Mention what you can and cannot do in Pakistan and the opportunities you expect when you return or progress.

2. Situation in Australia

Name the provider and course, why you chose it over alternatives (including Pakistani universities and other countries), your accommodation plan and how you will fund tuition and living costs. See how to show funds.

3. Value of the course

Link course content to your previous education and a concrete career plan. Mention specific units, industry links and expected roles.

4. Immigration history

Be honest about any past refusals and explain what has changed.

Evidence to attach

  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Work experience letters and tax/bank records (genuine only)
  • Funds documents with sources
  • Offer letter/CoE and course details
  • Accommodation plan and cost estimates
  • Any scholarships or sponsorship letters

Strong vs weak answers

Weak Strong
"Australia has the best education." "The Master of IT at [university] includes cloud architecture, which matches my five years in network administration."
"I will return and get a good job." "I plan to move into a solutions architect role at [type of employer] where cloud skills are in demand."
"My father will pay." "My father, a business owner for 12 years, will fund my studies from savings documented in the attached statements and tax returns."

Mistakes that cause refusals

  1. Copying templates.
  2. Unrelated course with no explanation.
  3. Funds that can't be traced.
  4. Inconsistent information across forms, CV and statements.
  5. Ignoring recent visa-policy changes: read our Australia guide for the dependants announcement of September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What replaced the GTE?

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement for student visas in March 2024.

Can I use a template for my answers?

Templates are easy to spot and weaken credibility. Use structure from guides, but write from your own circumstances with specific facts.

What if my course is unrelated to my previous study?

Explain the link clearly (career change, bridging work or certificates). An unexplained switch is one of the biggest red flags.
