Study in Australia from Pakistan 2026: Visa 500, Genuine Student Test and Costs

Visa fee, funds, the Genuine Student test and the new dependants restriction announced in September 2026 — everything Pakistani students should know before applying.

Key takeaways

  • Subclass 500 visa fee is AUD 2,000; plan about AUD 29,710 in living funds for a single student, plus tuition and travel.
  • The Genuine Student requirement replaced GTE in 2024 — your study plan and background must make sense together.
  • In September 2026 the government announced most new students and graduate visa holders won’t be able to bring partners or children (PhD students and some Pacific/ASEAN nationals exempt).
  • Australia caps new international enrolments (National Planning Level 295,000 for 2026) and applies a higher evidence level to Pakistan.

Australia combines world-ranked universities, strong work rights and a post-study pathway. It also has one of the most document-heavy student visa processes. This guide explains how it works for Pakistani applicants in 2026.

Quick numbers

Item Typical amount
Student visa (Subclass 500) fee AUD 2,000
Living funds (single student, 12 months) about AUD 29,710
Tuition — bachelor’s AUD 25,000–50,000 per year
Tuition — master’s AUD 28,000–55,000 per year
Health cover (OSHC) AUD 600–700 per year (approx.)

Add airfare and a buffer. Funds must be genuine, traceable and consistent with your sponsors’ income. Our funds guide explains how.

The Genuine Student requirement

Since March 2024 the Genuine Student requirement has replaced the old GTE. Immigration looks at:

  • Your circumstances — ties, age, background and why study abroad.
  • Your potential situation in Australia — why this course and provider, living arrangements and finances.
  • The value of the course to your future — how it connects to your career and what you will do after.
  • Immigration history and any previous refusals.

A clear, honest, consistent written response — not copied from templates — is the best protection. Read our SOP writing guide for structure.

Pakistan and evidence levels

Australia assigns countries an evidence level that determines how strict the documentation is. Pakistan sits at a higher level, so bank statements, income proof, academic documents and English test results must all be complete and consistent.

New in September 2026: dependants

On 17 September 2026 the Home Affairs Minister announced that most new international students and Temporary Graduate (485) visa holders will no longer be allowed to bring partners or dependent children. PhD students and students from some Pacific and ASEAN countries are exempt, and people already in Australia with family are not affected. At the time of writing the start date was still to be confirmed, so verify the latest information before planning for family to join you.

Choosing a university and course

  • Group of Eight (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW, Monash, UQ, Adelaide, UWA) — top research universities, highest competition.
  • Universities of technology and regional universities — UTS, RMIT, Deakin, Macquarie, Griffith and others, with practical programmes and industry links.

Match the course to your academic and work background. Unrelated switches draw attention in the Genuine Student assessment.

Intakes

February/March is the main intake, with July and November intakes for many courses. Apply 6–9 months ahead.

Work and after study

  • During study: up to 48 hours per fortnight.
  • After study: the Temporary Graduate visa may be available for eligible graduates; rules and durations change, so check current conditions.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Borrowing funds or showing deposits with no source.
  2. Templates for the Genuine Student statement.
  3. Choosing a provider because it’s “easy” rather than suitable.
  4. Not disclosing previous refusals.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours can students work in Australia?

Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods and without limits during scheduled course breaks.

Is Australia easier than the UK or Canada for Pakistani students?

Not necessarily. Pakistan is assessed at a higher evidence level, providers manage their own caps and the Genuine Student test is rigorous. Outcomes depend more on your file than on the country.

What is the Temporary Graduate (485) visa?

It allows eligible graduates to stay and work for a limited period after studying. Length depends on qualification and rules change often, so treat it as a possibility, not a promise.
