Study in Sweden from Pakistan: Fees, Scholarships and Residence Permit Requirements

Sweden rewards organised applicants: central applications, tuition waivers and a clear residence-permit process. Here is what Pakistani students need to know.

Key takeaways

  • Applications go through universityadmissions.se: the window usually runs from 1 October to mid-January for autumn entry.
  • Non-EU tuition is roughly SEK 80,000–190,000 per year, but scholarships and tuition waivers are available.
  • The residence permit needs about SEK 10,656 per month in funds (2026) and the application fee is SEK 1,500.
  • Housing is the biggest practical challenge — start looking early.

Sweden is known for innovation, sustainability and egalitarian campuses. For Pakistani students the country is not the cheapest, but its scholarships, English-taught degrees and strong graduate prospects make it worth a close look.

How applying works

Most master’s and bachelor’s applications go through the central portal universityadmissions.se. For autumn intake the application window typically opens around 1 October and closes in mid-January. There is a central application fee (around SEK 900), and you must upload your transcripts, English test result and supporting documents by the university’s deadline.

Costs

Item Approx. amount
Tuition (non-EU) SEK 80,000–190,000 per year
Application fee SEK 900
Residence permit fee SEK 1,500
Living funds for permit ≈ SEK 10,656 per month
Student housing SEK 4,000–7,000 per month

To receive a residence permit you must usually pay the first tuition instalment before applying and show you can support yourself for the entire period.

Scholarships

  • Swedish Institute scholarships — for students from eligible countries; check the current list for Pakistan.
  • University tuition waivers — Lund, KTH, Uppsala and others award partial or full waivers based on grades.
  • Erasmus Mundus programmes.

See the scholarships hub for application strategies. Because waivers are competitive, apply to several programmes.

Entry requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with the required credits (Swedish bachelor’s is three years; Pakistani 16-year degrees are generally accepted).
  • English: IELTS 6.5 with no band below 5.5 is common.
  • Subject prerequisites for technical master’s.

The residence-permit process

  1. Receive your admission letter.
  2. Pay the tuition instalment (if applicable).
  3. Apply for the residence permit online and give biometrics at the Swedish mission/visa centre.
  4. Wait for the decision — this can take several weeks.
  5. Plan your arrival and accommodation.

Work and life in Sweden

Students may work without a set hour limit, but studies must remain the priority. English works well in most workplaces, but Swedish is valuable for long-term careers.

The housing challenge

Student housing is scarce in major cities. Apply to university housing as soon as possible and avoid unverified rentals — scams exist.

Who should choose Sweden?

Sweden fits students with strong academics, an interest in technology, sustainability or design, and a budget that can handle high living costs. If you want lower costs, compare Germany or Hungary.
