Study in Italy from Pakistan: DSU Scholarship, Universitaly Pre-Enrolment and Visa Guide

Italy combines income-based tuition, regional DSU scholarships and English-taught degrees. Here is how Pakistani students apply, step by step.

Key takeaways

  • Public universities set tuition by family income (ISEE), from about €156 to around €4,000 per year.
  • DSU regional scholarships can include a cash grant, meals, accommodation and a tuition waiver for eligible non-EU students.
  • Pre-enrolment on Universitaly is required for the student visa, and some courses have entrance tests with fixed dates.
  • Students may work up to 20 hours a week; graduates can apply for a 12-month job-search permit.

Italy has become a favourite for Pakistani students who want a European degree without UK or Australian price tags. Top technical universities, generous regional scholarships and a rich student life make it attractive — if you plan the paperwork well.

How tuition works

Public universities charge according to your family’s economic situation, assessed through an ISEE Parificato certificate prepared from your home-country documents. Fees range from about €156 (the regional tax) up to roughly €4,000 per year, depending on income and the university. Private universities such as Bocconi cost far more.

DSU scholarships

Each Italian region runs a student-welfare body that awards DSU (Diritto allo Studio Universitario) support to eligible students. Depending on the region and your category, benefits may include:

  • A cash grant (often €2,850–€8,300 per year)
  • Free or subsidised accommodation
  • Meal vouchers or free canteen meals
  • A full or partial tuition waiver

Non-EU students, including Pakistanis, can apply, but you need an ISEE Parificato and must meet academic criteria. Applications usually run July–September. See our scholarships hub for other options such as MAECI and university awards.

Step-by-step: from idea to visa

  1. Choose programmes. Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Bologna, Sapienza, Padua, Pisa and Milan are popular.
  2. Check eligibility. Italy requires 12 years of schooling for bachelor’s entry and a suitable bachelor’s for master’s. Some courses need a foundation year.
  3. Pre-enrol on Universitaly. This portal registration is mandatory for the visa. Deadlines vary by programme.
  4. Apply to the university (portal or direct application), sit any entrance test (TOLC, IMAT, SAT or university test) and submit documents.
  5. Prepare documents — transcripts, translations/legalisation, CIMEA statement or Declaration of Value where required.
  6. Show funds. Italian authorities set a yearly minimum (roughly €6,000–€7,000 at the time of writing).
  7. Apply for a national study visa (Type D) through the Italian visa centre in Islamabad.
  8. After arrival, request your permit of stay (permesso di soggiorno) within eight days.

English requirements

English-taught programmes usually ask for IELTS 5.5–6.5 or equivalent. A few accept an MOI certificate. Italian-taught programmes need Italian proof (CILS/CELI/PLIDA). See our IELTS guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Italy cheaper than Germany for Pakistani students?

Tuition at Italian public universities is low but not always zero, and Italy’s regional DSU grants can offset living costs. Germany often has lower tuition but a larger blocked-account requirement. Compare total first-year cost, not tuition alone.

Do I need Italian to study in Italy?

Not for English-taught programmes, but learning basic Italian helps with daily life, part-time work and visa interviews.

When do DSU scholarship applications open?

Usually between July and September for the academic year starting that autumn, through the regional student-welfare body. Dates differ by region, so check early.
